Start a Daycare Business

Daycare Success Factors

When making the decision to go into the daycare business you first need to consider a variety of important factors that can help you to decide if daycare is the right business for you. These success factors include character and personality strengths, knowledge and abilities as well as your personal situation with regards to family and finances.

Owning and running your own daycare center can be an extremely satisfying and rewarding experience, but not everyone is cut out for working in the child care industry.

Before taking the plunge and starting a daycare business ask yourself if you have some of the following skills and attributes and if your personal situation puts you in a good position to succeed. Here is our list of ten daycare success factors.

Leadership and Communication Skills

Do you have leadership skills? As the manager of a daycare center you will be taking on a leadership role with both your staff and the children.

You also must be able to get along well with most people. Communication skills will be important for dealing with children, employees, parents and other parties. You must be able to communicate in a way that you can get your ideas across to people while still listening and understanding to their concerns.

Sometimes in daycare you may have to tell parents things about their children that they may not want to hear. There is always a tactful way to go about doing this so that they remain informed about situations but are not offended.

Time Commitment

Starting up and managing a successful daycare takes dedication. Right from the start you should be aware about how much time you have available to put into your business. A daycare business is usually a full time endeavor but it is possible to keep it part time if you look for the right opportunities.

You should plan to be in the daycare business for at least a few years. Due to the time and expense of getting started in the business it would not really be worth your time if you planned to be in business for less than a year.

Training and Experience

It is possible to get started with minimal training and no experience. However, if you do have a relevant qualification or have worked with children in the past then you will have a great advantage. If you don't, then make a commitment to learn more about child care and early childhood development.

Management Skills

Are you hardworking and organized? Setting up and managing a daycare center requires a lot of effort. You must be able to manage your time and resources in a way that maximizes productivity and keeps things organized. You need to be able to manage the practical side of day to day daycare operations as well as the business side. Some business sense will be required when it comes to keeping financial records or planning marketing campaigns.

Good Health

It is a fact of life that children get sick more than adults and colds can spread around daycare centers like wildfire. Being fit and healthy will ensure that your immune system is strong and that you can avoid getting sick too often. Good health will also give you the energy to lead the busy lifestyle of a child care center owner.

Patience and Control

It can take patience to work with children, particularly in groups. Some children require more attention than others and some can be badly behaved. Learn how to solve fights and arguments between children and learn how to use discipline when necessary

Can you keep cool in a crisis? To be successful in daycare or any business for that matter you should ideally be someone who will not panic in an emergency. You need to anticipate problems and emergencies that may arise and then have a plan to deal with them.

Enjoyment of Children

Do you enjoy working with children? Are you able to take responsibility for, and take care of other people's children like they were your own? Depending on the age groups that you are working with you may have to take care of them physically, discipline them, educate them or play with them. You may have to prepare 'child friendly' meals and you may have to think up activities and games to keep them busy. If you have a genuine love of children then it is easy to commit to a high standard of care.

Funding

Do you have sufficient funding to start a daycare business? You will need to ensure that you have enough cash to cover your living costs in the early stages as well before your business becomes profitable.

Family Considerations

You need to give serious thought to how your daycare business will affect your family life, especially if you are opening a home daycare. Do you have the support of all family members? How will your own children fit in with your plans to start a daycare business?

Housing Situation

Lastly, if you are going to open a home daycare, you need to quickly assess your home to see if it is suitable. Are you located in an area that is zoned for this type of business? Do you have sufficient space to care for children and comply with any licensing regulations? How will your daycare fit in with your family's personal space?

Successful business people take time to carefully evaluate an opportunity and to make sure that it is compatible with them personally. You should do the same to ensure that opening a daycare business is a positive and profitable experience for you.
